Doubles Championship 2019

Handcross members came out in force for the Club's annual Doubles Championship held on 6 January. David Leech organised the pairings so that the less experienced were teamed up with a more experienced player to enable every team as even a prospect of winning as possible.

Despite it being a raw day it was at least dry with just a light breeze as the 14 teams enthusiastically began their games. The first round saw Eric and Julie battling it out against Tony K and Kathy at the end of which the latter scraped a 13-12 win. When all first round games were completed teams 9 and 12 (Maggie and John; and Roy and Maria) were running equal 1st with +10 points.

The following games saw a turnaround in fortunes and finally, at the end of the competition, 3 teams had won all their games. With a narrow margin of 1 point Anne and Gerard managed to squeeze past Richard and Alan to be declared the Club's 2019 Doubles Champions. Competitors gathered round to witness Chairman David Leech congratulate Anne and Gerard as he presented them with the Rose Bowl.

Celebrations commenced with plenty of bubbly expertly poured by David to wash down the selection of nibbles which Anne had previously purchased, whilst those present raised their glasses to the new club Doubles Champions.
