Handcross Petanque Club Success

On a dank October night in deepest Hampshire, a 4-1 win over Bordon cemented third place for Handcross Petanque Club in the First Division of the Southern Counties Petanque Association 6-aside leagues. It’s been a meteoric rise for the team, having only entered the leagues in 2013. Since then, they have been promoted from the 4th, third and second divisions in successive seasons, twice as champions.

The club had anticipated a fight for survival in the rarefied atmosphere of the top division, but despite a couple of disappointing results, they finished the season strongly, with a record of 8 wins and 5 losses, with one match still to play.

Team manager Tony Kidd said proudly “I would like to thank all that have played during the past four seasons to make this happen – it’s been a real team effort”. But with a record like this, if the English FA decide not to appoint Gareth Southgate on a permanent basis, they could do worse than look towards Handcross.
